What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a small titanium post that replaces the root of a missing tooth. It's placed into your jawbone, where it fuses naturally with the bone over a few months. Once healed, a custom-made crown is attached to the post, giving you a tooth that looks and functions exactly like the one you lost.

Implants are the gold standard for replacing missing teeth. Unlike dentures, they don't slip or move. Unlike bridges, they don't require grinding down healthy neighbouring teeth. An implant stands on its own and can last a lifetime with proper care.

The Implant Process

  • Every implant case starts with a detailed evaluation at Confluence Dental. We assess your bone density, take 3D scans, and map out a treatment plan tailored to your situation. During this appointment, we'll discuss whether your implant placement will be done in-office by our team or with one of our trusted oral surgery partners, depending on the complexity of your case. Either way, Confluence Dental manages your entire implant journey from start to finish.

  • The implant post is placed surgically under local anesthesia. Most patients describe the procedure as more comfortable than they expected. You'll have a temporary tooth while the implant heals.

  • Over the next 3–6 months, the implant fuses with your jawbone in a process called osseointegration. This creates a foundation as strong as a natural tooth root. We monitor your healing at regular check-ins.

  • Once the implant has fully integrated, your permanent crown is attached. It's custom-made to match your natural teeth in color, shape, and size. The result is a tooth that looks and feels like it's always been there.

Long-term Care

Implants need the same care as natural teeth: brushing, flossing, and regular dental checkups. There’s no special maintenance required.

The implant post itself can last a lifetime. The crown on top may need replacing after 15–20 years due to normal wear. That’s a simple swap, not a new surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Still have questions? Take a look at the FAQ or reach out anytime.

  • The procedure is done under local anesthesia, so you won't feel pain during placement. Most patients report mild soreness for a few days after, manageable with over-the-counter pain relief.

  • The implant post can last a lifetime with proper care. The crown typically lasts 15–20 years before it may need replacing.

  • Most adults with good general health are candidates. You need enough jawbone to support the implant, but if bone has been lost, bone grafting can rebuild it. We evaluate your specific situation during your consultation.

  • Implants can replace one tooth, several teeth, or a full arch. For multiple missing teeth, implant-supported bridges or dentures are an option.

  • Cost depends on the number of implants, whether bone grafting is needed, and the type of restoration placed on top. We provide a clear, itemized quote during your consultation. Many patients finance their implants through monthly payment plans.

  • It depends on your case. Some implant placements are done right here in our office. For more complex cases, we work with trusted oral surgery partners. We coordinate everything so your experience is seamless regardless of where placement happens. All follow-up care and your final restoration are done at Confluence Dental.
